- The souths strategy was to win recognition as an independent nation
- Their strategy consisted of:
- Capturing Washington, D.C.
- Seize central Pennsylvania
- Defend homeland until north becomes tired of fighting

- Coastline: bay's and harbors
- Inland: rocky soil-- farming hard, turned to trade and craft
