The union army had more than 2,210,000 soldiers
360,000 died and 280,000 were wounded

The confederate army consisted of 750,000-1,000,000 soldiers

NORTH
The Union army was made up of men ranging from age 18-45
Young boys(around 12 years old) served as drummer boys
Men ranging from 50-60 years of age were enlisted as privates
1/3 of the of the soldiers were immigrants
1 in every 10 soldiers was African American

The African American soldiers refused their salaries for 18 months
Soldiers with school degrees marched next to men with no education
The Union army's uniform were all blue with 9 brass buttons down the front

SOUTH
Like the union army, the confederates ranged from 18-30 years old
More than half were farmers although only some owned slaves
They were not as technical because of their agricultural background
African Americans served as body servants and laborers during war
Their uniforms were white tattered shirts with grey pants

Around 620,000 soldiers died from combat,starvation and diseases
More men died than any other American conflict.(WWI,WWII, K-War, V-war combined)

The north was on its war towards a commercial and manufacturing economy
The north produced 17 times more cotton than the south
Free states had twice the value of of farm machinery as the slave states
Cotton was the most valuable export in the United States

The south was still mainly agricultural
They depended on the sale of staples
The south had little manufacturing capability
The south experimented with slave labor but didn't depend on it
