1850-TEXAS NEEDS MONEY

  • Texas sold its land for 10 million dollars for their dept
  • They sold parts of New Mexico Kansas Oklahoma Colorado and Wyoming.
  • The settlers caused problems for the Native American because settlers were driving away and killing animals that caused problems for the native Americans to eat and trade
  • Texans were consumers so slaves had to to help with consuming their products
  • Texas agreed to sell their land because the state needed money

  • AbrAham Lincoln elected president of the United States
  • More than 1 in every four texans was in a slaved African American
  • People in the south were afraid to give up there slaves
  • They made plans to separate from the rest of the U.S
  • South Carolina secedes

MARCH 2, 1861

  • Texas joined the confederate state
  • The confederate included 7 states
  • The first state to join the confederate was South Carolina
  • Jefferson Davison was a president of the confederate
  • Robert E. Lee was the confederate general

  • Abraham Lincoln was elected president
  • Abraham Lincoln was against slavery
  • The southerners were worried congress was going to band slavery

APRIL 12, 1861

  • There was a war between the confederate(south)and the union (north
  • Some family's had to kill each other because they were on different sides
  • More than 60,000 people fought in the war
  • About more unions died than confederate
  • The union states had much larger population than the confederate

  • Union ships tried to capture Galveston Harbor
  • General John B. Magruder,had recaptured the port

SEPTEMBER 8, 1863

  • Union ships tried to capture Sabine pass
  • They damaged two ships
  • The union was defeated at the battle of Laredo
  • The highest ranking Confederate person defeated them
  • Confederate soldiers In a fort died at enemy ships

MAY 13 1865

  • The last battle of Civil war was started
  • They clashed at palmetto ranch near Brownsville

APRIL 9, 1865

  • The union won the civil war
  • Abraham Lincoln had issued the emancipation proclaimation
  • All slaves were free
  • It took ten years for the north and the south to get back together
  • There was a new rule that will help slaves find jobs and homes

JUNE 19, 1865

  • Gordon Granger announced that all slaves on Texas are free
  • For the next 6 weeks,Gorden announced the news to people all over Texas
  • The master needed to call up all of the news
  • A new problem came,what would the slaves do if they had no money

MARCH 30,1870

  • Texas rejoins the union
  • The United States flag flew over Austin again
  • Many Anglo Americans in Texas did not support the new governor
  • They thought he spent to much state money
  • And was to eager to help African Americans
