  • 1941 - Joined the Somali police force after British took control and rose to the position of chief inspector
  • 1966 - Held the rank of major general and became commander in chief
  • 1969 - Strengthened relations with Soviet Union then later renounced it and sought US aid but allegations of human rights abuse hurt his international standing

  • 1990 - Fighting among clans and their militias and the government forced Siad to promise reforms, including free elections.
  • 1991 - Forced out of office
  • 1992 - Went into exile in Nigeria
