CLAIM

KNOWLEDGE THAT THE DOCTORS HAD WERE VERY LIMITED ALSO THERE KNOLEDGE ON DISEASE
During the civil war the medical Practuses and knoledge of the surgeons,doctors,and nurses were not that good during that time, but it wasn't just medical Practuses that they didn't know a whole lot about it was also the diseases that came along with the civil war.

AMPUTATION

  • A surgeons kit mainly had 2 surgical saws,cutting pliers,a curved probe,clamps,a retractor,a brush
  • " practices of surgery" by Samuel cooper + notes by Dr.alexander H.stephens
  • 75% of amputents did recover
  • In 1864 a union solders found away to control gangrene by poring carbolic acid on it
  • Carbolic acid- it's an affective but very painful disinfectant

CHLOROFORM

  • It was used as an anesthetic,but only when it was available
  • It was held over the mouth+ nose on a rag until they were unconsius
  • Most of the time they would be awake and given something to have to be able to bite down on for the pain

DISEASE

  • In a hospital diseases spread faster because of being so close to one another
  • It was not that often that soldiers were able to get to building so they had to sit outside
  • "Hospital gangrene"was a chronic problem in most hospitals
  • Doctors didn't wash there hands or tools so people got sick because of that,but they would wipe it on there aprons
  • There were 3 main causes of diseases- bad food,over crowded camps, lack of cleanses
