PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Morse code was invented in 1843, by Samuel Morse.
The telegraph line ran from Washington D.C to Baltimore, Maryland.
The purpose of the telegraph was to provide rapid communication of long distances. The method of communication used in the telegraph was morse code, which was a series of dots and dashes made up of electric currents being alternated.
The dots and dashes made up of letters which combined to from words, then sentences, and then complete messages, etc.
Five million morse code messaged were sent annually starting around 1860.
When Lincoln arrived for his inauguration in 1861 there was not even a telegraph line the the war department. But soon the war department got a telegraph line hooked up.
President Lincoln, Robert .E. Lee, U.S. Grant, and many government officials used morse code frequently during the Civil War.
But the problem was, when storm clouds were brewing and they wanted to send a telegraph, they would send a clerk with a hand written message to stand in line at Washington's central telegraph office. That would take forever and soon the situation would Change, and they would not be giving the right information.
If we did not have morse code and the telegraph the war would be completely different.
