CLAIM STATEMENT

Based on age and social class, women during the civil war era had a specific dress code

WEALTHY ATTIRE

  • Wealthy women wore at least 8 layers of clothes
  • Up to 30 pounds
  • A lot of jewelry

GLOVES AND HATS

  • Women always wore gloves
  • Also, they had to have some sort of head covering
  • Poor women and slaves wore scarfs as hats

MOURNING

  • All black clothing
  • The mourning period for a spouse was 2.5 yrs.
  • The mourning clothes were mainly wool in the north and cotton in the south
  • The mourning clothes needed to shine and stay nice
