ALMA MATER

  • In Rome this phrase was used to refer to female goddesses
  • Recently the term is used by students to refer to the colleges they graduated
  • There are many monuments signifying the alma mater
  • Even Mary was known as an Alma Mater to the people
  • The alma mater can refer to a colleges theme music

ALPHA AND OMEGA

  • The alpha and omega were the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet
  • This term was used to describe Jesus when he said "I am the alpha and the Omega."
  • When he said this he stated that he would be the beginning and the end.
  • These letters are also included in the Hebrew alphabet.
  • They even turned it into a cartoon movie

HORTICULTURE

  • -The art or practice of garden culture or management
  • Horticulture deals with the production of food and non- food crops
  • Derived from the Latin word hortus meaning garden
  • Horticulture is a smaller and more intricate version of farming
  • Horticulturists specialize on advancing the production of plants as to where they are more practical

HYDRA

  • A hydra can refer to a multi-headed serpant found in Greek mythology
  • A hydra had poisonous breath and if a warrior cut off its head it would grow two more
  • In one of his many quests Hercules slayed one if these serpants
  • There is also a constellation that symbolizes this serpant said to have been put in they sky by Hercules

POLYTHEISM

  • - the belief or worship in one or more God
  • This comes from two Greek terms poly- meaning many and theos- meaning God
  • There are two types of polytheism one is a unit of many beliefs
  • The other description of polytheism states that there are multiple separate physical Gods
  • Ancient Greeks and Romans were polytheistic, they both believed in msnh gods

PELOPONNESUS

  • Peloponnesus is a large peninsula in southern Greece
  • The peninsula was devided into three seprate sections during Greek war
  • Peloponnesus means the island of Pelops a hero who was said to have conquered this entire region
  • This structure has changed possession many times but is currently withheld by Greece and is a luxurious place to reside
