  • He was the oldest of five children.
  • He lived in poverty with his family as a youth.
  • He came under the patronage of Nadezhda Filaretovna von Meck.

  • At age 9, he had shown talent as a pianist and entered the Paris Conservatory.
  • He got in trouble in music school for not following the rules of composition.

  • Father was a shopkeeper named Manuel-Achille Debussy.
  • Mother was a seamstress named Victorine Marnury.
  • Had four siblings.
  • One daughter, Claude-Emma, who was nicknamed ChouChou.

  • Blanche Vasnier was his first love.
  • Gabrielle DuPont, another fiancé, threatened suicide.
