PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CLIMATE CHANGE

ITS CAUSES, EFFECTS, AND HOW WE CAN HELP

WHAT DO YOU THINK CLIMATE CHANGE IS?

THE CLIMATE IS THE AVERAGE WEATHER PATTERN IN AN AREA.

THIS IS THE AVERAGE WINTER IN CANADA

BUT, LAST WINTER , ENDED UP LIKE THIS:

THIS IS SUMMER

BUT, LAST SUMMER WAS COOLER THAN USUAL:

GLOBAL WARMING

CLIMATE CHANGE IS OCCURRING BECAUSE OF

WHAT IS GLOBAL WARMING?

  • When there is an increase in the climate:
  • An increase big enough to change the climate
  • When the Earth's surface gets warmer

CAUSES FOR GLOBAL WARMING

  • Human Activity such as:
  • The burning of "Fossil Fuels" in automobiles, etc.
  • Air and Water Pollution
  • Natural Activity such as:
  • "The Greenhouse Effect"

WHAT IS THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT?

THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT

  • Co2 helps keep the Earth warm
  • Without this effect, the
  • Earth would be 20 degrees cooler

THE ALBERTA TARSANDS

ANOTHER BIG CAUSE

TAR SANDS

  • Crude oil is very expensive and is in high demand
  • Rivers are being polluted with carcinogen
  • Endangering wildlife
  • You have to clear a whole forest to dig it up

EVIDENCE

How do we know that Climate Change is occurring?

METEOROLIGISTS

  • Are scientists who study the weather
  • Have kept records of the Earth's temperatures
  • They compared recent temperatures to temperatures thousands of
  • years ago
  • Confirmed in 2006 that it is warmer now than in the past 12,000 years

OLD PHOTOGRAPHS

  • A chunk of ice sheet larger than Rhode Island, broke into
  • small pieces and drifted into the ocean
  • Certain mountain glaciers are melting at faster rates
  • Ice around the North and South Poles is also melting
  • Sea levels have risen 10cm since 1900's

MORE EVIDENCE

  • Measurements:
  • An area of ice the size of TEXAS in the Artic,
  • disappeared
  • Unusual weather

CONSEQUENCES

WHY SHOULD I CARE ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE?

ITS EFFECTS

  • Wildlife is starving/drowning
  • Food and clean water shortages
  • Bad weather (typhoons, etc.)
  • Diseases spread more quickly
  • Common animal extinction

WE WILL NOW SHOW YOU A VIDEO

THAT EXPLAINS THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGE

HOW WE CAN HELP!

CLIMATE CHANGE MUST STOP!

WAYS WE CAN HELP AS KIDS

  • Conserve energy and water
  • Walk or bike to nearby places
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
  • Put garbage in its place
  • Compost

A TEST?! OH NO!!
