TWO COLOR HIGHLIGHTING
In addition to the text to be read, students must be equipped with two different colored highlighters.
Usually yellow and green, although any combination will work as long as
the lighter color is used for
the first step.

FIRST READING
Use the yellow highlighter to indicate words or ideas that are unknown.

This indicates a place where
that student needed to
slow down to try to make
sense of what was read.

Use the green highlighter to indicate words or ideas that are well known.

This shows where the student
was able to read smoothly and
with good understanding of
what was being read.

THEN WHAT?
The teacher can ask students to compare with a friend the areas they had highlighted in the same color.
Then send the students on a “safari” in class to see who had highlighted in green those things they had in yellow.
Those with the green can then share their understanding with their classmates.

THEN. . .
Students return to their seats and reread the text.
This time they will highlight in green (over the yellow) the areas where they have new confidence in their understanding.
Repeat steps until the passage is all in green for “go forward.”
