Cnidaria

  • The word Cnidaria comes from the Greek word Cnidos.
  • This means stinging nettle.
  • Cniadria are most well known for their poisonous stingers. 
  • These are called nematocysts.

Cnidaria

  • Cniadaria is found underwater.
  • There are thousands of species living in the oceans.
  • Some are even found in freshwater lakes.

Cnidaria-classes

  • Anthozoa
  • Cubozoa
  • Hydrozoa
  • Scyphozoa

Anthozoa

  • includes coral, anemones, sea fans, and sea pens
  • many animals that have polyps that look like flowers
  • large, carnivorous polyps  
  • feed on fish
  • fossil record that dates back 550 million years

  • square shaped top
  • 4 evenly spaced tentacles
  • deadly
  • 20 known species

  • can't survive outside of the colony
  • about 3700 species
  • small predatory animals

  • typical jellyfish you see at the beach
  • no head, skeleton, or special organs
  • stings may cause rash, muscle cramps, or even death
