Coahiltecan Indians

Food

  • We Coahuiltecans ate bison, peccary, armadillo, rabbits, various small birds, shellfish, various types of fish, Mesquite beans, prickly pear fruit, pecan acorns, buffalo, turkey, squirrels, spiders, deer, Snakes, Mesquite, lizards, undigested seeds from deer dung.

Religon

  • We, the Coahuiltecans didn't have an organized religion
  • Band members had their own beliefs
  • Shaman held religious ceremonies, in ceremonies children get tattooed by the Shaman
  • The Bride and Grooms parents arrange marriage for them

Housing

  • We lived in round dome-shaped houses called Wickiups
  • We used poles covered with matting made of grass, or cane
  • The houses have a low entrance, inside there's a central fire, with deer-skins for bedding
  • the houses can contain up to ten people

Tribal Roles

  • The Elders were usually the most respected people in the tribe
  • Men that had power probably got it past down from ancestors
  • we don't really have much of a government system

Tribal Art

  • Us Coahuiltecans would put tattoos on their arms, legs, faces, and torso
  • We would numb the skin, make shallow cuts in skin with sharp objects like animal teeth, and rub charcoal on it to make it black

Tribal Art Continued

  • We also made ornaments to put on necklaces usually made of rocks and snake vertebrea
  • We put the necklace on when someone dies, (usually on the person who dies)

Region of Texas

  • We lived in Southern Texas Northeastern Coahuila and much of Nuevo Leon and tampaualipas
  • The Region has flat gently rolling terrain particularly in Nuevo Leon and Tamaualipas
  • Mountain Masses raise East of the Sierra Madre oriental
  • The Rio Grande dominates the region

Tools and Weapon

  • We used bows and arrows, war clubs, spears, tomahawks, and knives, a travious, rabbit stick, and woven baskets for gathering

Interactions

  • We thought that everybody was our enemy, but most of these wars were caused by not understanding because we all spoke a different language and different territorial battles

Economics

  • We didn't trade,
  • hunters and gatherers hunted deer, buffalo, and since they lived on the coast they also fished

Conflicts

  • We raided Spanish Cottelmen and drove the Spanish out of Nuevo Leon in 1587
  • but we lacked organization and political unity to their mount and affective defence when a larger number of Spanish settlers returned in 1596

Conflicts Continued

  • Conflicts between the Coahuiltecans and the Spaniyatrds continued throughout the 17th century
  • Spanish replaced slavery by forcing the indians to move into the encomienda system

Communication

  • we have seven different languages
  • one is called Coahuiltcan or Pakawa, this is spoken by bands near San Antonio
  • the best known languages are Comecrudo and Cotoname, which are spoken by people in the delta of the Rio Grande

Medicine & Health

  • We mash up ivy leaves to prepare a remedy for ring worm, fractured limbs, and gunshot wounds
  • We also used plants to stop diarriah

Traditions

  • We would come together in large numbers at night and did a dance called mitotes
  • peyote was eaten to put us in a trace-like state

Clothing

  • The women would wear dresses made out of deerskin and knee boots with beads
  • men would wear deerskin moccasins or warriors would wear light blue riding boots
  • the men were dressed in deerskin pants and shirts
