COBALT

  • CO is cobalt's symbol.
  • Cobalt was discovered by George Brandt in 1739
  • The word cobalt comes from the German word "kobald" which means goblin. Miners were superstitious about the ore.

USES

  • Cobalt can be used for making magnets.
  • Cobalt salts are used for blue colors in paint, pottery, glass, and porcelain.
  • Radioactive cobalt-60 is used for treating cancer and, in some countries, to irradiate food for preservation.

NATURAL ABUNDANCE

  • Cobalt is found in the minerals
  • Most cobalt however is formed as a by-product of nickel refining.

COMMON USES

  • Cobalt is used in batteries, paints, medicine, alloys, pottery, trace elements, and meteors.

WHERE IS IT FOUND?

  • The majority of cobalt is mined in Africa and is the by-product of mining other metals including nickel, copper, silver, lead, and iron.
