WHAT IS COCAINE?

  • Cocaine, also known as coke, is a strong stimulant mostly used as a recreational drug. It is commonly snorted, inhaled, or injected into the veins.

HISTORY

  • Coca is one of the oldest, most potent and most dangerous stimulants of natural origin.
  • Cocaine was first isolated
  • As of 2008, cocaine had become the second most trafficked illegal drug in the world.

SHORT TERMS

  • intense depression
  • Craving for more drug
  • Increase heart rate
  • Less sleep
  • Muscle spams and convulsions

LONG TEMRS

  • Severe depression
  • Tolerance and addiction (even after just one use)
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Permanent damage to blood vessels, heart and brain.
  • Respiratory Failure if smoked.

STATISTICS

  • After marijuana, cocaine is the second most commonly used illicit drug in the United State.
  • More than 400,000 babies are born addicted to cocaine each year in the U.S.f
  • Approximately 10% of people who begin using cocaine will immediately progress to serious, heavy use of the drug.f
  • 3.3 percent of high school and college students report being current users of cocaine.

IS IT ADDICTIVE OR NOT?

  • Cocaine is a highly addictive drug.
  • Second most addictive.

TREATMENTS

  • Baclofen- a muscle relaxant that curbs cocaine craving.
  • Nocaine- is a drug that provides a weaker version if cocaine; blocks stimulant effects.
  • Disulfiram- an anti-alcoholic agent that makes using cocaine very unpleasant.

  • Benzoylmethylecgonine; main psychoactive ingredient.
