Cocaine

Can be inhaled through the nose and absorbed into the nasal tissue or dissolved in water and injected into the bloodstream.

What does it Do to the Brain?

  • Can constrict blood vessels in the brain
  • Increases levels of dopamine 
  • Causes excessive amounts of dopamine to build up
  • Disturbed sleep patterns
  • Loss of appetite

Short Term Effects

  • Intense high, followed by intense depression
  • Diet and sleep problems
  • Increased risk of heart attack, stroke, seizure or respiratory failure
  • People can feel paranoid or angry even when they aren't high
  • Intense drug craving

Long term Effects

  • Damage to blood vessels of heart and brain
  • Malnutrition, weight loss
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Liver, kidney, and lung damage
  • Severe depression
