YOUTH MARRIAGE AND COHABITATION
2.
QUICK FACTS
More than half of young adults will live with someone prior to marriage
Cohabitation is more common among African Americans, among people who are poor, and among people who are not religious.
Cohabiting is also more prevalent among young adults whose parents were divorced or who are from single-parent homes
Almost half of all cohabiting couples have one or more children (Fields, 2004), and many have been previously married.
3.
ADOLESCENT MARRIAGE
5.1 percent of girls and 2.3 percent of boys ages 18 and 19 were or had been married.
21.1 percent of young women and 12.7 percent of young men were or had been married by age 24
Hispanic youths were much more likely to be or have been married than non-Hispanic White or Black youth.
Very young married couples are usually from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
