YOUTH MARRIAGE AND COHABITATION

QUICK FACTS

  • More than half of young adults will live with someone prior to marriage
  • Cohabitation is more common among African Americans, among people who are poor, and among people who are not religious.
  • Cohabiting is also more prevalent among young adults whose parents were divorced or who are from single-parent homes
  • Almost half of all cohabiting couples have one or more children (Fields, 2004), and many have been previously married.

ADOLESCENT MARRIAGE

  • 5.1 percent of girls and 2.3 percent of boys ages 18 and 19 were or had been married.
  • 21.1 percent of young women and 12.7 percent of young men were or had been married by age 24
  • Hispanic youths were much more likely to be or have been married than non-Hispanic White or Black youth.
  • Very young married couples are usually from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Premarital pregnancy
