COLD WAR

BEGINNING

  • The Cold War was the result of the tension between the U.S. and the Soviet Union
  • They were very different: The U.S. had a capitalist economy with a representative government
  • The Soviet Union had a communist economy and government
  • It was called a cold war because no physical warfare actually took place

ECONOMIC SYSTEMS

  • U.S. Capitalism: based on private enterprises and free market economy
  • Soviet Communism: productive communism with balanced growth

U.S. FOREIGN POLICY

  • Had two counterstrategies to containment
  • Supported wars of national liberation or colonial revolution
  • Wanted to be equal to the U.S. in military power

KITCHEN DEBATE

  • The debate illustrated the tension between the two nations
  • This showed how badly the two nations differed from each other
  • On one hand there was capitalism and democracy
  • On the other, there was communism
