ORIGINS

  • After WWII U.S. and U.S.S.R. were elevated to glabal power
  • Could not agree how to rebuild Europe and Germany
  • Sought to spread their respective views on politics and economy
  • Referred to as "cold" war because the heat of battle
  • Instead all conflicts were indirect and in "cold"

CAPITALISM VS. COMMUNISM

  • Capitalism is Democratic, Communism is totalitarian
  • In Capitalism there is private property, in Communism the state owns all property
  • Uneven wealth distribution in Capitalism, everyone paid the same in Communism
  • Capitalism supports free enterprise, Communism doesn't
  • Capitalism supports free press, Under Communism the gov. controls press

U.S. Foreign Policy

  • U.S. began the Foreign Policy of Containment
  • Russia was forced to compete with the U.S.
  • Military technologies advanced (nuclear programs)
  • Space Race was initiated

KITCHEN DEBATE

  • Debate between Nixon and Khrushchev
  • Nixon Advocated Capitalism
  • Khruschev defended Communism
  • Illustrated the high tensions between the U.S. and U.S.S.R.
