COLD WAR HISTORY

  • This was a state of political and military tension after WWII
  • These tensions were over a clash of different beliefs and ideology
  • The Cold War started in 1947 and ended in 1991
  • The Cold War was between the United States and the Soviet Union
  • The war brought the worlds superpowers to the brink of disaster

GERMANYS INVOLVEMENT IN THE COLD WAR

  • Germany was divided into four zones of Allied military occupation: American, French, British, and Soviet.
  • During the Cold War, Germany became the center for all the tensions between Democracy and Communism
  • The end of World War Two left Russia in possession of all of Germany up to 300 miles west of Berlin.
  • The Berlin Blockade began in mid 1948 as Russian forces surrounded West Berlin
  • In 1961, Berlin, the last place through which immigrants could leave East Germany, was blocked by the Berlin Wall

THE END OF THE COLD WAR

  • The unraveling of the SOVIET BLOC began in Poland in June 1989 with a new government being formed
  • East and west Germany started tearing down the Berlin Wall in 1889
  • Many Americans felt they had won the Cold War but others taught no one won
  • Many people got fed up with the way the Soviet Union was running their country so they had a rebellion
  • Overall the war cost many lives and lots of money
