Cold War

by Luke Conlon

The origins of the Cold War began at the end of WWII. The former allies, untied by the want to oppose Germany, gained new interest once Germany surrendered. The United States and the USSR became interested with their own growth now that the war was over. The real conflict came from how these two nation would achieve their goals of political and economic power. The USSR was communist and the US was Democracy and capitalism.

The Cold War got its name due the the physical confrontation in the war. There were no physical confrontations.

Capitalism is free enterprise and private businesses. The people are in charge of their money. Also the US is a Democracy, which is a representative government. The USSR is a Communist state. This means the government is in charge of the economy and the people are not greatly represented.

There were two counter strategies to the containment policy. The USSR would support wars of national liberation or colonial revolution, and attainment of military parity with the United States and it's allies.

This debate between Nixon and Khrushchev demonstrate the conflict between the two nations. It portrayed the differences in beliefs and how this led to conflict.
