FIRST PHASE :THE USE AND USSR WORK TOGETHER TO DFEAT GERMANY

MAIN PLAYERS

  • Stalin
  • Roosevelt
  • Churchill

ROOSEVELT

  • Distrusted Soviet Union but had a diplomatic understanding with Stalin (they were on "good" terms)
  • One of the founders of the Grande Alliance between Britain, Soviets, and US
  • Believed Nazis were a bigger threat than Soviets and decided to focus on them first
  • National Defense Act of 1940 gave him the right to place embargoes materials deemed essential to US defense

STALIN

  • Put focus on a strong military and economy
  • Stalin feared the west was using the war to weaken USSR
  • Wanted Eastern Europe/Germany after War he felt it was entitled to him
  • Stalin distrusted FDR and Churchill cause he was not invited to the meeting at Casablanca
  • Tensions grew when he was not informed of the A bomb

WINSTON CHURCHILL

  • Had strong relations with FDR
  • Distrusted Stalin
  • Refused to give up the war
  • Received aid from the US while Soviets hardly got any

MAIN POINTS

  • Britain US did not trust Soviet Union
  • West felt Germany was a greater threat than USSR and decided to focus on nazis for now
  • Nuclear Bomb
  • War pushed Britain and US to improve diplomatic relations with the Soviets
  • USSR feared The west was using the war to weaken USSR
