COLD WAR RESEARCH Project

A closer look into the Vietnam War

How effective was the United States war against Vietnam at containing communism, and was the cause of containment worth fighting over?

Containment- Containment is the act of preventing the expansion of a hostile country or influence. In the case of the Cold War, America was trying to prevent the spread of communism.

Reasons to fight the war

One of the arguments pro America fighting Vietnam, is that the "domino theory" might have taken place if we had not. Although America did not win the Vietnam War, it did show other countries America was willing to fight and die to prevent communism.

Reasons not to fight the war

One of the reasons America should not have entered the war, is because no one was willing to fight and die for the cause. Most of the troops did not feel very strong about communism or containment, and did not feel pride in fighting for their country for such a cause. There was not a lot of support back home from families and friends, because Americans were not willing to risk the lives of their troops for what they thought was a small cause.

Another reason America should not have fought the Vietnam War, is simply because they were not fighting on their land. It was very easy for the North Vietnamese to plan surprise attacks and outsmart the Americans. American troops could never tell if they were in safety or danger.

When America entered the Vietnam War, it was almost like Americans were going against their own democratic beliefs. Ngo Dinh Diem, the leader of South Vietnam, was a corrupt leader who used violence and force to enforce his policies and beliefs on his citizens. The fact that America supported such a leader, just because he wasn't communist was a hypocritical and unwise decision to make.

One of the final reasons America should not have fought Vietnam, is because of the terrible outcome it brought. Around 58,220 soldiers died, simply for a cause that was not America's place to fight for. The U.S paid billions of dollars for the war, only to have to withdraw later on.

America should never have been involved because the cause of the war, and the leaders they supported was not worth the horror it brought. To America, the war was fought over the containment of Communism and the fear effect created by the “Domino Theory.” To the Vietnamese people, the war was about independence, freedom. It wasn’t America’s war to fight in the first place, which is why they should never have gotten involved.
