Collin McKinney was born April 17, 1766.

In the Spring of 1793 Collin served in Lincoln county's 6th regiment.

In 1794 he married Amy Moore.

Amy Moore died 1804.

In 1805 he married Betsy Leak Coleman.

He moved to Tennessee in 1818.

In 1824 he and his family moved to Hickman's Prairie.

Santa Anna had said he wanted control of Texas.

Texans didn't want Santa Anna to have control of them.

They wanted to govern themselves. 

To gain their freedom from Mexico,

the Texans decided to make their own republic.

Colin and 4 others developed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

In 1836, Collin and 49 other Texas leaders

signed the Declaration Of Independence.

Collin was the oldest member of the convention.

Collin was 70 years old then.

He was a surveyor.

He measured land and helped develop county lines. 

In 1844, he brought people to Texas.

A county was made in 1846, called Collin county.

In 1848, they created a city called McKinney in his honor.

He died on September 8, 1861, at 91 years old.

He is buried in Van Alstyne, TX.

Collin was important to our area for many reasons.

He was a critical member of the establishment of our community.
