  • Areas include much of South America, the Caribbean, and Middle America
  • Other countries in Europe wanted the same power that Spain had
  • European countries seized different parts of the Americas

  • France, Britain, and the Netherlands took control of some Caribbean areas.
  • They also took parts of North America.

  • European rule transformed the populations of these lands
  • They settled the land and set up colonial governments
  • They also spread Christianity to the Natives that lived there
  • They forced the Native Americans to farm their cash crops

  • Hardship and disease greatly reduced the population of the Natives
  • Europeans brought African Americans to meet the shortage
  • Slavery then started a busy trade business
  • On return trips from Africa they brought many valuable goods with them
  • Many Native Americans and Africans ways survived leading to a blending culture
