MARYLAND'S BEGINNING

  • Started as a proprietary colony on June 10th, 1632
  • Named after a French princess Henrietta Maria
  • Governed by a German Palatinate Lord

PURPOSES FOR FOUNDING

  • Founded as Catholic safe haven
  • Also founded as buffer zone for the Dutch in New York

CONFLICTS IN THE COLONY

  • Around 1644 Native Americans attacked the colony, and did not end until peace was signed in 1652
  • During an English Civil War, religious conflicts would occur in the colony
  • A Protestant revolution would occur in 1689, returning it as a royal colony

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Passed Maryland Toleration Act, which would mandate toleration for other Christians
  • Only proprietary colony given to a Catholic by the British government
  • By the 18th century was an effective plantation colony
  • Location of the Mason-Dixon Line
  • One of the last two proprietary colonies
  • Would become proprietary government again in 1769
