FOUNDERS

  • John Winthrop founded the Massachusetts bay colony in 1630
  • He was the first governor of all the colonies
  • Winthrop was elected as Massachusetts governor in October 1629
  • He served 12 annual terms before his death in 1649

REASONS FOR FOUNDING

  • The puritans were looking for religious freedom.
  • Massachusetts was founded based on the Mayflower contract.
  • The puritans were also looking for trading oppurtunities.
  • Unlike Plymouth, Massachusetts was founded under a royal charter.

PEOPLE IN MY COLONY

  • The settleres were Puritans from England.
  • Hard workers and traders made up this colony.
  • Indians who were natives to the land, also lived in Massachusetts.
  • Most people from Massachusetts were from England.

CLIMATE AND GEOGRAPHY

  • Massachusetts had mild and short summers.
  • The short summers led to long, cold, severe winters.
  • This colony had jagged coast lines and hills.
  • Massachusetts also had many mountains, trees and rivers.
  • The soil wasn't the best to grow crops.

ECONOMY IN THE MASACHUSSETS BAY COLONY

  • In towns along the coast line, many people fished or shipbuilt for a living.
  • Fishing, shipbuilding, and whaling were the main jobs.
  • The crops that they managed to grow were corn, squash, pumpkins, etc.
  • They focused on town life and industries.
  • Also focused on manufacture and export of rum

RELIGION

  • There was no religious freedom.
  • Puritans frowned upon anyone who didn't believe the same religion.
  • Dissenters were banished due to religious disagreements.
  • More colonies were founded after more people wanted religious freedom

POLITICS

  • Massachusetts was governed under a royal province
  • Massachusetts Body of Liberities was the first code of laws
  • The first governor was John Winthrop
  • Trading was a big part of Massachusetts government
