THE NEW YORK COLONY

Founder
The founder of the New York colony was the Duke of York. It became an English colony in 1664. He was from the Dutch.

Reasons Founded
The New York Colony was founded for trade and furs. The Duke of York had received control of New Netherlands. The name of the colony was changed to New York in honor of him.

People in My Colony
Some famous people from the New York Colony were Giovanni de Verrazano and Thomas Dongon. Verrazano was the first European to see New York. Thomas Dongon was the Provincial Governer of New York.

Climate/Geography
The climate of the New York colony was hot and humid summers. However the winters were bitterly cold. New York's geography had mountains, plains, and rolling hills.

Economy
Economy in the New York colony was simple. They had jobs for printers barbers and tanners, and if you were not interested in those jobs, you could work in the shipping business.

Religion
New York was between the catholic and puritan colonies. This caused the settlers to be of many faiths. The religion was often segregated and individualistic.

Politics
The New York colony was run by a governor appointed by the King of England. He made all the laws and there was little self-government. Sometimes the colonists were able to gain more freedom, but it did not last long.
