FAMILY ROLES

  • Role in household depended on age, gender, and status
  • Father's role is to make sure the household is in order
  • Mother's role is to be the caregiver for the children
  • Children were given chores that most often times were hard

CHORES

  • The chores children had were difficult and tiring
  • Husk corn, gather eggs, carry wood, or water.
  • Lead oxen, gather berries, churn butter

GAMES

  • Children created games to make the chores more fun
  • They competed against each other to pass the time faster
  • They played: hoops, jackstraws, ninepins, Quiots

FUN FACTS!

  • Did you know...
  • Children who misbehaved had to put the split ends of branch on their nose!
  • Many colonists beleived tomatoes were poisonous and did not eat them!
  • Young boys wore loose fitting dresses until the age of five or six!
  • Slumps and grumps were really desserts!
