COLONIAL TERMS

MERCANTILISM

  • Definition: Staying wealthy by controlling trade
  • Affects:
  • --England became very wealthy because of the heavy taxes on colonists
  • -Traders had a decent profit due to the mark-ups they would implicate when selling their trade
  • -Colonists would have very little or no profit due to the taxes and Mark-ups

TRIANGULAR TRADE

  • Definition: a trading system where a country pays for imports from one place, and sells it's exports to another.
  • Colonies would send Cotton, lumber, metal ore, and tobacco to England
  • England would then send cloth and iron to Africa.
  • They would then send things like clothing, weapons, and furniture to the colonies.
  • Africa would send goods to England, and slaves to the West Indies, or Colonies.

THE GREAT AWAKENING

  • Definition: 15 year period of spiritual growth in the Colonies
  • Settlers decided to change the way they worshiped.
  • Widespread all over other religions, not just one.
  • People were more emotional during prayer.

ENLIGHTENMENT

  • Definition: a period of time when people believed science and logic was more important than religion.
  • Gave people a better understanding of the world
  • Came up with scientific reasonings for things that, up until then, went unexplained.
  • Brought out of a religion-centered way of life
  • Paved the way to the industrial era

  • Definition: the beginning of modern science
  • Goes hand-in-hand with enlightenment
  • Questioned 'old science' came up with new theories
