COLONY PROJECT: NEW YORK AND WLATER RALEIGH

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

  • Date and birth- Born around 1552 in Devon, England
  • Cause, date, and place of death- He was beheaded on October 29, 1618
  • Social class- He was in the gentry social class which was often education and land owning
  • Education- He attended Oriel College, Oxford University, and went to the middle bar
  • Reason for the involvement in the Colony- He funded several voyages to colonize the coastline north of Florida

SIR WALTER RALEIGH

  • 6. Did they actually live in the Colony- No, he lived near present day Florida
  • 7. Religious beliefs- He believed that if all Welcomed God, then they were welcome

COLONY: NEW YORK

  • Types of Colonies- The three types of Colonies are Royal, Proprietary, and Self-Governing
  • Type of Colony- New York was a Royal Colony: it was originally a Dutch Colony then changed to an English Colony
  • Purpose of the Colony- New York was created for land and profits
  • Founder of the Colony- Peter Minuit, a Protestant, created it in 1624
  • Type of people lived in it and how many there were- Most people were Dutch: population in 1788- 150,000

  • 7. When did they arrive at the Colony- 6 months after they left
  • 8. Problems they encountered- They encountered poor skill at agriculture
  • 9. Type of rule (government) they established- The colony was run by a governor appointed by the king of England
  • 10. Did it successfully achieve its purpose- Yes it did and it became one of the most powerful states in the country

  • 11. Relationship with Native Americans- They had good relations with the Native Americans
  • 12. Which type of people were accepted in the Colony- All except slaves
