COLOR BLINDNESS

CAUSES

  • Sex linked gene
  • Males w the disease pass on to carrier daughters
  • Who produce sons with color blindness

FACTS

  • 1 in 10 males are color blind
  • It is an x linked disorder, meaning it is mostly found in males
  • Caucasians are far more susceptible
  • 1 in 100 eskimos are color blind

SYMPTOMS

  • Trouble seeing colors
  • Trouble seperating shades
  • Severe nystagmus (side to side eye movement)

TESTING AND SCREENING

  • Common eye exam
  • When diagnosed or suspected, color wheels are used to pinpoint details
  • Anomaloscope, comparing two colors on screen. Helps show severity.

TREATMENT

  • No known cure
  • Some glasses help seperate shades
  • Non life ending

EXTRA FACTS!

  • 8% of all men are effected
  • Women who are red-green blind, will have sons who are also red-green blind.
  • Fathers will not pass on the disorder to their sons
  • About .5% of all women are effected
  • Police officer, firefighter, and airline pilots are required to have normal vision
