COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES

MOTTOS AND MANTRAS

  • Words to live by
  • Adages=wise sayings; proverbs
  • Good to have; they keep us focused

USING QUOTATIONS

  • Quote the words of others word for word and using quotation marks...
  • He/she said, "..."
  • Quote, excerpts, friends, family, characters, etc..."

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

  • Get familiar with the subject topic
  • Acquire knowledge
  • What's the history?
  • The scoop?
  • The 411? The info?
  • Prior knowledge

FACTS AND STATS

  • Facts= validate what you say or write.
  • Cite sources for even more credit (validation)
  • Stats= statistics
  • Give your audience the numbers

BRAINSTORM

  • Generating ideas
  • Finding ideas
  • Ways to brainstorm : lists, bubble maps, graphic organizers, drawing, talking, researching, thinking, free writing, etc.

ISSUING A CHALLENGE OR CALL TO ACTION

  • If you want someone to do something, ask!
  • Challenge people
  • Call them to action!
  • Be clear and specific about your request!

USING STORIES

  • Everyone loves a good story, so tell one!
  • Some long and detailed...
  • Some short and sweet...
  • Anecdotes are rid bits--- side notes

ASKING QUESTIONS

  • Get audience thinking!
  • Engage people
  • If appropriate, let audience answer
  • Rhetorical ?s= need answer them because it is implied or obvious

MENTOR TEXT

  • An example of good writing for writers
  • Anchor text; model text
  • Anything it brings to mind, or borrow, a line
  • Free flow... lets go!

SYMPATHY AND EMPATHY

  • Be a sympathetic and empathetic listener
  • Sympathy- to feel sorry, even if you can't personally relate
  • Empathy- to feel someone else's pain personally; been there

TRANSITION

  • Transition one text to another
  • Flow freely

REFERENCE TO AN OCCASION, EVENT, OR TIME

  • Occasion: special ones like, holidays and birthdays
  • Event: sporting, concerts, parties, plays, festivals
  • Time: "remember the time..." personal or historical

VISUAL AIDS

  • Eye catchers focus audience
  • V.a.s enliven, enhance, emphasize
  • Make v.a.s big and bold, so people can see
  • Don't pass v.a.s around (distracting)

APPEAL TO EMOTION

  • Connect on an emotional level... feelings
  • "In ELA 8, we practice sympathy and embrace empathy."
  • Mad, sad, glad, bad, rad, fabulous

USING SUSPENSE

  • Give hints and clues but not all info
  • Answer throughout...
  • Tease audience...
  • Be sure to give all info by the end...
  • Cliffhanger/trailer

POETIC DEVICES

  • Alliteration
  • Assonance
  • Simile
  • Metaphor

SIMILE AND METAPHOR

  • Simile= Compare two different things
  • Metaphor= compare without using "like" or "as"

  • Repeated syllable
  • Closed rhyme: almost!
  • Street rhyme: close!
  • Slanted rhyme: practically!
