2.AFFORDABLE HOUSING

Committed to working with the City and others to address our City’s affordable housing crises, the Friends of the Lowcountry Low Line has land that could be used to build sustainable affordable housing adjacent to the Low Line. This location is ideal because residents will be able to get to jobs and school using safe and active transportation options.

4. RECONNECT NEIGHBORHOODS

In 1964, construction of Interstate 26 began – cutting through the center of the peninsula. The neighborhoods in its path were demolished and divided. The Low Line linear park will bring this land back into the fabric of Charleston; neighborhoods will reconnect.

5.ECONOMY

ADD MONEY TO THE TAX BASE
HR&A Advisors, Inc., an industry-leading urban development consulting firm, conservatively estimates a net tax revenue gain of $48 – 63 million over twenty years.

6.TRAFFIC RELIEF

The Low Line will provide traffic relief by providing safe active biking and pedestrian options to get to work and school.

7.ELEVATE LOCALS

STIMULATE LOCAL BUSINESSES
The Low Line will not only contribute to economic growth but will provide a structure to organize that growth in a way that benefits the residents and local businesses.

8.DRAINAGE SOLUTION

SAVE MONEY
With access to this 1.6 miles of property centrally located down the spine of the peninsula, the City will save money by making use of the land for drainage assets. Because the land is almost totally unencumbered by underground utilities, the City will benefit from significant construction savings. There is a particularly significant opportunity in the area of Huger Street and the Low Line.

9.TAP CREATIVITY

INSPIRE EACH OTHER
The Low Line Park will be the second largest park on the peninsula. The Friends of the Lowcountry Low Line will work with the cultural and creative arts community to infuse the park with creative spirit.

NETWORK

The Low Line Park will serve as the spine of a network connecting major current and future recreational and park areas. Specifically, the Low Line Park can connect Marion Square and the central part of the City to the Ravenel Bridge and its bike/ pedestrian path, Hampton Park, Laurel Island, the new skate park, Magnolia, West Edge and MUSC.
