Three types of essay exams each requiring different written responses:

Short answer (like our Final Exam)
Paragraph-length
Essay-length

We'll discuss out of order but from least to most common.

Paragraph-length: 5-7 sentence response per question formulated into paragraph form: topic sentence, then concise supporting sentences illustrating or serving topic sentence.

Strategies: use examples in supporting sentences; prewrite ONLY if time permits; do not attempt full essay answers (one simply will not have time).

Essay-length: response requiring full essay structure (i.e., five paragraphs)

Strategies: use ENTIRE essay structure; do not begin writing immediately: spend first ten minutes prewriting: specific thesis and at least three evidence points; write prewriting out on exam sheet or scratch paper if possible.

Short answer: 2-3 sentence response per question to adequately respond

Other essay exam tips:
Survey test first before responding and do easy questions or ones one absolutely knows the answer to.

Make sure that one understands the questions: raise one's hand and ask questions from one's instructor!
