PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE COMPROMISE OF 1850

EMMA CHRZANOWSKI AND LIZZIE VOLANTE

This compromise was necessary because it held America together for a little bit longer; although , tensions were increasing . It recognized issues that were not addressed in the Missouri Compromise in 1820.

OUTCOMES IN THE NORTH

  • Gained another free state (Califronia)
  • Prohibited slave trade in Washignton
  • Texas lost boundary dispute with New Mexico

OUTCOME IN THE SOUTH

  • No slave restrictions in Utah or New Mexico
  • Slaveholding permitted in Washington D.C.
  • Texas receives $10 million
  • Fugitive slave law

The results of this compromise greatly affected the balance of free and slave states. Furthermore, the compromise was not enough to keep the country together, and after only 11 years, a Civil War began.
