CONFIRMATION

SOME IMPORTANT FACTS

  • This sacrament is usually professed by a Bishop
  • Fortitude: the will you have to do good things even when things are difficult
  • Consecrate: set other things away and focus for a holy purpose
  • The gifts of the Holy Spirit: right judgement and council, knowledge and reverence, and wonder and awe

REQUIREMENTS FOR CONFIRMARION

  • Faith: the candidates must be baptized and must profess their faith with the church
  • Age: usually teens receive confirmation
  • Will or Choice: must have a clear intention for receiving the sacrament
  • Grace: they must be in a state of grace and not have any mortal sin

THE PARTS OF RITE OF CONFIRMATION

  • Presentation of the Candidates: the pastor presents the candidates to the bishop
  • Homily: the homily helps the candidates understand the mystery of Confirmation
  • Renewal of Baptismal Promises: they renew the profession of faith they made at baptism and that parents and godparents make union with the church
  • The Laying of the Hands: the bishop extends his hands on the candidates and prays and invokes the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
  • Anointing with Chrism: the bishop lays his hand on the head candidates and says," Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit" while anointing the candidate with the Sacred Chrism on the forehead

THE EFFECTS OF CONFIRMATION

  • We receive the grace of the Holy Spirit
  • We accept grace and join Christ's mission
  • We cooperate with grace and bring reconciliation in the world
  • We strengthen our bond with the Church
  • The grace of the Holy Spirit helps guide us to live as the prophets did and keep the Covenant
