CONGENITAL ANALGESIA

WHAT IS IT?

  • A rare congenital condition where a person has no pain sensation
  • The patient is unable to feel physical pain
  • Frequent physical injurires
  • Nobody knows how people get it

HOW COMMON IS IT?

  • There has only been 40 cases have been reported in the scientific literature.
  • This condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern
  • which means both copies of the gene in each cell have mutations.

HOW DOES A PERSON GET IT?

  • Caused by increased production of endorphins in the brain
  • Patients with such mutations are congenitally insensitive to pain and
  • lack of other neuropathies

WHAT IS GOING WRONG?

  • Its because of high levels of proteins and endorphins produced.
  • The children are born with the mutation.
  • The names are: SCN9A,W897X

CAN WE TREAT IT?

  • The drug Naloxone can be used as treatment.
  • This treatment doesn't always work.

HOW DOES IT AFFECT THE LIFE OF THE PATIENT AND THE PATIENT’S FAMILY?

  • The inability to perceive pain is a severe danger
  • Because they have no way of understanding when the body is being
  • Put in mortal danger
