CONNECTION BETWEEN SLEEP AND ATHLETICS

BACKGROUND INFO

  • Goal: better undertanding of physcological influemce of sleep inn youth
  • Open lable
  • Inclusion: age 13-20, healthy, willing participation
  • Informed consent by participant and parents
  • Exclusion: arrhythmia, chronic illness, unwilling participation

PROTECTION

  • Trials are approved by belmont review board
  • The willowbrook study took advantage of vulnerable youth with out participant consent. Thus led to the IRBs .
  • The IRBs are respect for person, beneficence, and justice.
  • This study requires informed consent by the participant and their parent
  • Participants are given analyzed data

STAGE 1

  • Evaluate the sleep quality and performance over two weeks
  • Fill out general health survey
  • Wear heart monitor belt for two weeks while sleeping
  • Personal sleep analysis will be given to the participant
  • Standing, recovery, and waking heart rate will be recorded during athletic performance

STAGE 2

  • Randomized into two groups. Group A will get 1-2h more sleep
  • Group B will remain the same
  • After two weeks the groups will switch
  • Continued monitoring of injury, sleep, and porformance
  • Continued use of heart monitor belt and survey before and after sleeping

STAKEHOLDERS

  • Athletes/coaches: beneficence, no harm to atheletes with improvment
  • Parents: justice, respect for persons, full discolsure and no coersion
  • Docotors: beneficence, little harm with progress in science
  • Participants: justice, respect for person, no tricks, all info is given

BENEFITS/ RISKS

  • Better physiological knowledge of sleep in youth
  • Improved performance by sleep programs for athletes
  • Risks are not enough sleep
