THEY SERVED WITH OUT WEAPONS

HISTORY

  • They were Quakers, Brethren, and Mennonites
  • Thousands went to jail for not using weapons
  • There religion though that killing another human being was wrong under any circumstance

HISTORY

  • They served in the Civil War, World War I, World War II, and Vietnam War
  • 42,000 people became COs in World War II

JOBS

  • By World War II the government allowed COs to serve as non-combatants in hospitals and national parks
  • During War they performed tasks not directly involved with killing such as ambulance driving

SHOWING PATRIOTISM

  • About 500 COs competed to become human guinea pigs
  • They allowed themselves to be tested to show the effects of dehydration among other things

DESMOND DOSS

  • He was born in Lynchburg Virginia, February 7, 1919
  • Joined the army on April 1, 1942
  • He served on the islands of Guam, Leyte, Okinawa
  • Assigned to Infantry Rifle Company
  • He won the Medal of Honor

DESMOND DOSS

  • On his Sabbath he saved 75 people on Okinawa by running into fire fight he was injured several times but he refused help until other men were taken first

PERCEPTION

  • People did not like COs because they didn’t use weapons
  • Their commanding officers didn’t care if they got beaten up
  • They went to military jails for not fighting in war
