MAIN POINTS OF WATER CONSERVATION

  • Restoring damaged or destroyed terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems
  • Maintaing diversity in a population
  • Keeping drinking water clean
  • Reducing the amount of pollution in the water
  • Reduce over harvesting of a species

MAINTAINING DIVERSITY IN A POPULATION

  • Must be able to migrate to mating spots every season
  • The offspring that are the most fit will survive
  • If there is chemical pollution it can result in death, or genetic mutations
  • Most fish die with from genetic mutations; they cant adapt to survive

KEEPING DRINKING WATER CLEAN

  • Without clean drinking water, people risk getting sick or can die
  • To maintain healthy water to be processed, the ecosystem needs to be maintained
  • In 3rd world countries, having clean drinking water is rare, which results in sickness for example.
  • By air, and water pollution, drinkng water sources can become stagnent and undrinkable
  • By taking steps to conserve the aquatic ecosystem and water, there wouldn't be a sustainable ecosystem.

WATER POLLUTION

  • It is caused when chemicals, or hard metals leach their way into the water
  • When a body of water is polluted, it can cause a fish kill
  • Many things can cause pollution, chemicals being poured down drains being a big non-direct cause
  • Lakes/ponds that are polluted cannot sustain a healthy environment for any living creature
  • Most polluted water will be covered in green algae from fertilizers

OVER HARVESTING

  • Can diminish the diversity of the species if not bred properly
  • Can make certain fish species weak when released into the wild
  • Over harvesting can cause a collapse in an entire industry.
  • Over harvesting fish is when someone exceeds the maximum yield of harvesting
  • This results to low species numbers, and can make a species collapse possibly

THINGS THAT CAN HELP

  • Don't pour chemicals down storm drains
  • Recycle
  • Don't use fertillizer if you live near bodies of water
  • Allow for species to reproduce before you fish for them
  • Support local fisheries to help maintain healthy populations of fish
