PRESENTATION OUTLINE

FAMILY ABUSE

IN JEWISH CONSERVATIVE COMMUNITIES

What is Family Abuse:

Family abuse is when a person (i.e. a parent, caregiver) assaults their family members either physically or emotionally/verbally.

What does Judaism say about family abuse?

The Rabbinical Assembly says that we cannot assume someone is the victim of abuse, even if that person makes the report to a person of authority, friend, or even family member.

So what does that mean for the victim?

That means that the victim has to prove that one of their family member's abusive actions and provide evidence.

So what happens after they have given the evidence?

After they give the evidence, it is then reported to the Rabbinical Assembly and is carefully examined to make sure that the accusation is correct.

What does the Rabbinical Assembly do after they examine the case?

After examining the case, a Responsa is made (if the family member is found guilty) that reinstates their position in the community.

So does the community talk about it and make the situation a public matter?

The answer is no. Once the decision has been made by the Rabbinical Assembly, there is to be no talk of the situation from anyone who has knowledge of it.

What happens in communities where Responsa does not take place?

What happens is rabbis use their religious and communal powers to shame the offender so hopefully they will change their ways.
