Federalism

Power shared between government and state.
When the Founders drafted the Constitution, the Federalist supported the central power government while the Anti-federalist against it. Federalism represented for the relationship between the central government and the states, power is divided equally between the central government and the states. That is why we use a venn diagram to show the sharing between them. The 6-word summary goes straight to the point: Power shared between government and states

Checks and Balances

No one has too much power
In Checks and Balances, each branch has some control on the other two branches so that no branch become too powerful. Example, the executive branch can veto a passed law from the legislative, turn back, the legislative branch can cancel the veto with ⅔ votes from both houses of the congress and a judicial branch can decide if a law is unconstitutional. We choose the picture drawing the three branches, there is a check mark and a scale to represent that they check on each other and balance their power.

Separation of Powers

Government is seperated into 3 branches
The government is separated into three branches, each will have separate power and areas of responsibility. But these branches are still keep eyes on the others, so it make sure that no branch can overcome the power. We choose the picture of a tree with three big branches, legislative, executive, and judicial. Together they make a complete government.

Popular Sovereignty

People are source of government powers
According to the Constitution, people is the sovereign and not the government. And the government only exist with the consent of the people. They vote for their representatives and have the rights to withdraw the one who don’t do their job. We use the picture of the sentence “We The People” from the U.S Constitution because it is the people who create the government. So the 6-word summary says that people is “the source”.

Limited Government

Limit government to prevent absolute power.
The framers retricted the power of the goverment to prevent tyranny so it is not all powerful. All governmental actions must be based on constitutional principles. The picture shows that people have the right to vote for their arguments, and the govenrment has to listen to its citizen’s desires, not standing on them or take control in everything. The 6-word summary means that the governmental power was minimizing and not unlimited.

Judicial Review

Declare a law passed by Congress
Judicial review is one of the checks and balances in the separation of powers: the power of the judiciary to supervise the legislative and executive branches when the latter exceed their authority. The image show a judge sitting in his desk with the gavel in his hand and the balance next to him, which show that he would be the one who represent justice and equality. The 6-word summary means that the Judicial branch can declare a law passed by Congress unconstitutional.
