Contemplative

Prayer

we may think of prayer as words,
but this is only one expression

contemplative prayer opens the mind and heart to God's presence

centering prayer is one way to develop contemplative prayer

1. Choose a sacred word

  • a symbol of your consent to God’s presence
  • Use a word of one or two syllables, such as: Jesus, Peace, Stillness, Trust
  • do not change it during the prayer

2. Sit silently

  • comfortably, with eyes closed, begin to think the sacred word as an invitation to God to be present

3. Think the word.

  • When engaged with your thoughts, return ever-so-gently to the sacred word.

4. Remain silent to finish

  • We are going to leave quiet and stillness and go back into brightness and noise.
