The International Cervantes Festival is held annually in Guanajuato, Mexico, led to art and culture, and it has worldwide fame, it’s fame increases the importance of this city. In addition, year after year The festival helps increase the importance of the city of Guanajuato.
The Cervantes, popularly known as the festival Cervantino serves primarily to celebrate the contribution of Miguel de Cervantes to the culture of Mexico, although in recent years it has become a commemoration of artists and artistic movements as a whole. It is celebrated for two weeks in October and is highly recommended to see.
Started in 1972 by the university professor Enrique Rueles, each festival has grown in importance and scope over the years. In 2010, the Cervantino festival coincided with the Bicentennial of Mexican Independence and the Centennial of the Revolution, making it a major national event that welcomed guests of honor of Argentina, Chile and Colombia, as well as Mexican artists of states like Chihuahua, Querétaro and Michoacán.
Historically, it is not known the exact date of conception of this festival, although its roots seem to go back to a much smaller event that began in the early 50’s, owing to the Spanish colonial heritage in the city, University of Guanajuato students could locate the works of Miguel de Cervantes in the historic areas of the city. This tradition gained fame and recognition both inside and outside of Mexico. The start of the Festival is accepted that took place in 1972, under the protection of the president of Mexico, Luis Echeverria Alvarez. That year, with support from the Federal Government, the little festival was renamed and grew in ambition. The popularity of this event made artists around anxiously wished to participate.
The first officially celebrated Cervantes September 29, 1972, and it has since thenhelped to increase the visibility of the city and make it a national and international tourist destination. This recognition was supported and helped by the UNESCO as World Heritage naming. It has undoubtedly been a success, attracting visitors from around the world. This depletes multicultural celebration event tickets months before start date and is a difficult task to find hotels with vacancies in nearby areas.
This is a festival worth seeing for its variety and artistic diversity. It is not uncommon in the program, along with the works of Cervantes, concerts of world famous groups like Radiohead and theater companies such as Stomp. Artists of the stature and popularity of Rudolph Nureyev, Philip Glass, Ely Guerra and Horacio Franco have also participated in this festival. Since the whole city was thrown into the street during Cevantino many activities are organized outside the festival, including performances in cafés or concerts of popular music groups. Nor is it uncommon to see theater, living statues and musicians filling the streets and squares of the entire city
