My Name is Kari Jane Bartos

I was born in Portland, Oregon and my major is Public Health Education

The Walking Dead is a show about survival, humanity and family in a post-apocalyptic world dominated by zombies. Rick Grimes awakens from a coma to find himself in a world ravaged by a zombie virus epidemic. His first thought is to find his wife and son, against all odds he reunites with his family and along the way he creates a whole new family of survivors.

Episodes

I watched three episodes : 1. Days Gone By  2. Us  3. Remember

Analysis : Family
Many families have been broken up in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. In order to survive groups of people from diverse backgrounds have band together in order to provide the same love and support as a biological family and to better their chances of survival.

Analysis : Female Gender Roles
In this post-apocalyptic world we have seen the gender roles of the women change. Before the zombie apocalypse Michonne was a mom and played a more submissive role. After the zombie apocalypse Michonne transformed to become a strong, warrior women, just as formidable and capable if not more than any man. Michonne is a powerful women.

Analysis : Female Gender Roles
We have seen Carol transform from a soft spoken housewife with an abusive husband to a strong independent woman. All of the female characters on The W. D. have evolved in to strong woman, equal members of the group, they have left their traditional gender roles behind

Analysis : Parenting
It takes a village to raise children in the zombie apocalypse. The group works together to provide parenting for Carl, Judith and the other survivor children. We also see many examples of men being amazing nurturing parental figures.

Analysis : Money
Money is irrelevant in the Walking Dead world. The things that are important are resources like water, food, weapons, shelter and the support and protection of a family group.

Conlusion : The Walking Dead may seem like a show filled with gore and zombies but it is also a show about family. The W.D. shows strong women in equal roles, tough but sensitive men. The W.D. is a show about second chances and acceptance.

Conclusion : The Walking Dead highlights the idea that family doesn't have to consist of blood relatives. I relate to this idea very much because my family is composed of not only blood relatives but friends that have become family, friends that are just as caring, loyal and nurturing as my biological relatives, if not more so.

Conclusion : Family is one of the most important parts of life and in this world your life depends on the family bonds you have created.
