ALVAR NUNEZ CABEZA dE VACA
EXPLORER BIOGRAPHY
- Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca was born in 1490
- He was a Spanish explorer of the new world and one of four survivors of the Narvaez expedition
- He had difficult travels from Florida through Texas and on to Mexico City
- He returned to Spain and expressed outrage at the Spanish treatment of the Indians
- He became a judge in Seville until his death around 1597
GOAL FOR EXPLORATION
- To convert many of the natives living in these parts of the world to Christianity
- To conquer the specific part of Florida that the landed on
- To gain fame and fortune for being the first Spaniards in this section of America
ALVAR'S MAP OF EXPLORATION
SUCCESSES
- He wrote about his travels to the new world which encouraged other Spanish expeditions to the Americas
- He landed in Florida and claimed the land for Spain
PROBLEM'S ALVAR FACED
- The exploration faced a hurricane which caused a lot of men to die loss of supplies
- They faced disease, starvation, and attacks from the Natives
- Their ships were lost so they had to build new boats
