PRESENTATION OUTLINE
The area of Mesopotamia is a region that is in "The Fertile Crescent" . The area covers modern day Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, and others. It was between two rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates. The word Mesopotamia is Greek for "the land between the rivers".
In this region, the land in very fertile, hence the name. In the northern areas, the are streams and rivers that are fed from the mountains. There is also a rainy season, which is also a big help. However, the southern region is more dry. But soon, mankind figured out how to plant crops, civilization soon followed.
THE GOVERNMENT HERE WAS UNUSUAL.
- The Sumerians didn't write down their laws.
- Sumer was divided into city states, with the same law and culture.
- They believed in many gods here. You were punished if you insulted them
The people here invented one of the oldest languages, cuneiform. It involved pictographs, like Egyptian or Chinese. They kept records of almost everything, as it was very important to society. They didn't have paper or ink, so they used stone or clay to carve into.
There was a Babylonian kind called Hammurabi who once decided to write down all the laws, so nobody could violate a law and say that it didn't exist.
RELIGION WAS VERY IMPORTANT TO THEM
The people here successfully learned how to grow food. They originally caught wildlife and all that, but soon they learned that if they tended to the crops correctly, they could grow lots of food. In the north, there was lots of rain. However, in the south, they had to learn how to make dams to get water.
They also found out how to work with metals (and this process is called metal working). They started by hammering the metals into what they needed, but soon they learned how to melt the copper. Gold and silver soon came in.
