ASHIKAGA YOSHIMASA

WHO WAS ASHIGAKA YOSHIMASA?

  • Ashigaka Yoshimasa was a Japanese shogun. He was born on January 29th, 1436 and died at 56 years old on January 27th, 1490.
  • He was married to his wife, Hino Tomiko and had a son, Ashikaga Yoshihisa.

WHO WAS ASHIKAGA YOSHIMASA?

  • He was made shogun at only 13 years of age.
  • He controlled his power from 1449- 1473.
  • Not long after he was made shogun he changed his last name from Yoshinari to Yoshimasa.

WHO WAS ASHIKAGA YOSHIMASA?

  • Ashikaga adopted his brother's son and made him shogun after his own son passed away.
  • When he retired he lived in the retirement villas called the Ginkaku-ji buildings and devoted his life to art and cultural life.
  • He was the 8th shogun in his family line.

WHAT SIGNIFICANT EVENTS HAPPENED IN HIS LIFE?

  • Before he was shogun:
  • 1443- Southern Court supporters stole the Imperial Regalia. 1445- Hosokawa Katsumoto was made shogun 1446- The Southern Army suffered a crushing defeat 1449- Ashikaga Yoshimasa was made shogun

WHAT SIGNIFICANT EVENTS HAPPENED IN HIS LIFE?

  • Once he was made shogun:
  • 1455 – disagreement in Kamakura between Kubō and his Uesugi Kanrei line: "Koga Kubō" established. 1457 – "Horikoshi Kubō" established. 1458 – Imperial regalia brought back to Northern Court. 1460 – Hatakeyama rebels against Yoshimasa.

WHAT SIGNIFICANT EVENTS HAPPENED IN HIS LIFE?

  • 1464 – Yoshimasa adopts Ashikaga Yoshimi, his brothers son. 1466 – disagreement over Shiba succession. 1467 – Outbreak of the Ōnin War 1473- He retired from his position as shogun 1477- the Ōnin war ended 1489- Ashikaga Yoshimasa's son passed away and his brothers son was made shogun 1490- Ashikaga Yoshimasa died

WHERE DID HE RULE OVER?

  • Ashikaga Yoshimasa was the ruler/shogun of the Muromachi district of Kyoto.

WHEN WAS HE SHOGUN?

  • Ashikaga Yoshimasa was shogun from 1449 at the age of 13 and finished from his position in 1473 at 29years old. He was shogun for 24 years.

HOW DID HE BECOME SHOGUN?

  • He became a shogun as it was passed down from his family. They ruled from 1338-1568. This period was know as the Muromachi period, named after the place where their palace was.
  • The founder of the line was Ashikaga Takuji.
  • Some adoptions were made throughout this family line. (Brothers adopting nephews.)

WHY DID HE MAKE THE DECISIONS HE MADE?

  • Ashikaga decided to retire from a shogun at 29 years old and pass the position on to his brother. Although his wife bore a son and demanded that he take over the position. Even though Ashikaga tried to make a peaceful decision a war broke out between two rival military factions working for the shogun called the Ōnin War. In 1473 Ashikaga put his son in the position of shogun just before the war ended in 1477. When his son died in 1489 he made his brothers son shogun.

WHY DID HE MAKE THE DECISIONS HE MADE?

  • The Ōnin war caused many architectural treasures to be destroyed When Ashikaga made the decision that his son would take over his power and become the next shogun he anticipated that his son would outlive him. Although, his son died prematurely which lead to the decision of Yoshitane, his brothers son, to become shogun. Yoshitane outlived Ashikaga.
