He became a shogun as it was passed down from his family. They ruled from 1338-1568. This period was know as the Muromachi period, named after the place where their palace was.
The founder of the line was Ashikaga Takuji.
Some adoptions were made throughout this family line. (Brothers adopting nephews.)
Ashikaga decided to retire from a shogun at 29 years old and pass the position on to his brother. Although his wife bore a son and demanded that he take over the position. Even though Ashikaga tried to make a peaceful decision a war broke out between two rival military factions working for the shogun called the Ōnin War. In 1473 Ashikaga put his son in the position of shogun just before the war ended in 1477. When his son died in 1489 he made his brothers son shogun.
The Ōnin war caused many architectural treasures to be destroyed
When Ashikaga made the decision that his son would take over his power and become the next shogun he anticipated that his son would outlive him. Although, his son died prematurely which lead to the decision of Yoshitane, his brothers son, to become shogun. Yoshitane outlived Ashikaga.
