The Montgomery bus boycott didn't just happen. There were hundreds of people that walked miles every day for freedom. The boycott lasted for over a year (381 days)and was started for a simple reason, bus segregation in Montgomery.
In Montgomery, AL, everything was segregated (separated); vending machines, drinking fountains, bathrooms, and most importantly, buses. In bus businesses, the first 10 seats were reserved for whites, the other 26 were for African American passengers. The more the bus filled up with whites, African Americans had to move back or get off.
The bus drivers in Montgomery were mean to all of the African Americans. They had to enter from the back of the bus after African Americans payed in the front of the bus. At least 40,000 African Americans rode public buses and 12,000 whites rode public buses everyday.
